Session Summary
After a successful but exhausting raid, the Fatebreakers returned to Blackwall to find their new military commander, Kase, waiting with impeccable formality. While Halfbie privately revealed to Steve and Keith that the party had actually secured a staggering million gold—not the modest sum they'd claimed, the group debriefed and learned that the three "New God" children (Seer, Myst, and newly hatched Cas) had been left in their care. Viktor gifted Mordecai his magical ring, and the party decided their next destination should be the desert to seek out Shoni for answers about the gods, Aidan, and possibly help for the children. However, a scrying attempt on their former ally Empress Obeus revealed her brutally executing rebels, including Lord Enelion, suggesting she had become a ruthless tyrant.
That night brought disturbing developments: Halfbie woke to find their room covered in advanced magical formulae they had no memory of writing, which Viktor suspected might be the work of the entity sharing their body. Meanwhile, Drache dreamed of the Korrigan in the fading Feywild, reluctantly agreeing to a pact that would allow the fey to visit his dreams in exchange for causing future chaos. In the morning, Mordecai spent time with Cas, who matter-of-factly acknowledged she was dying from having too much magical power. Rather than pushing her toward a dangerous "fix," Mordecai promised to be her friend forever and accepted her exactly as she was, prompting Cas to declare herself "bringer of perfect." The session ended with the party preparing to leave for the desert while managing their growing, chaotic household of god-children.
Full Session Notes
As the airship flew over the roaring waves far below, the party slowly rested their exhausted bodies and minds. Viktor, Drache, Aidan and Halfbie all sat at a table on the deck, resting their eyes and making idle chat. Mordecai sat to one side, seemingly in deep conflict over their actions in the golden fort.
Their thoughts were broken when the captain of the ship called out from the upper deck that the OFC was now coming into view. Viktor slowly got up from the table and approached Mordecai with a kind smile. sitting next to the Tiefling, he commented on how Mordecai gave quite a show back at the fort.
"I had help." Mordecai replied curtly.
"Ah, yes, but it was still your body doing it... you were conduit for what happened"
"I suppose"
"Much like how I channel Vaelrith's powers, it doesn't make my magic powers strong because of him, I am the conduit for his powers here."
Viktor then pulled the ring off his finger and handed it to Mordecai, stating that they might have more use for the ring than he would, despite it linking to Vaelrith. Mordecai took the ring, playing with it in their hand, to prick their finger to watch the ring react with their blood.
"It's like a messed-up mood ring... Thanks Viktor"
While this was happening, Halfbie pulled Keith Horrigan and Steve to one side so they were out of earshot of Ringo. They explained to the councillors that the raid was far more successful than they had let on. Keith's ears pricked up upon hearing this.
"You see, we promised Ringo over there a percentage cut of the profits..." Halfbie explained, "But 10% of 1 million is a lot of money!"
The two were dumbfounded for a moment. "you mean to say that those bags..." Keith began
"Have 1 million gold in them?" Steve finished, when Keith lost his words in the shock.
"Yes... i won a bet," Halfbie said matter-of-factly, as if that cleared everything up.
Keith and Steve exchanged glances. Steve tried to give his best I-told-you-so expression, but even he was shocked at how well the party had done. For his part, Keith was reexamining everything he thought about the party and considering that Steve might be telling the truth about them.
Halfbie continued, explaining that he had made the bet so they could try and get enough money to at least pay the guards and begin enacting more of their plans. The two nodded, clutching the bags a lot tighter as halfbie returned to their table.
The airship soon came into land at the docks behind the black tower. As they exited the ship, they were greeted by a large guard troop all in perfect rank and file. They stood, creating a long corridor to the entrance of Blackwall, in motionless salute. In the middle, ready to greet them, was a tall guard in the emerald fort's armour. When they approached, he gave them a modest bow and said, "Greetings, Fatebreakers. I am Kase, Son of Genevieve," he said with a confident smile, extending his hand.
Drache shook Kase's hand. Kase seemed easily matched by Drache's immense strength, impressing the dragonborn thoroughly. "Please accept my deepest apologies for taking such a long time to arrive here with my troops," Kase said, his voice carrying the weight of a seasoned politician. "It took some time to recover our numbers. I assume your original arrangement with my mother still stands?"
Halfbie, very clearly and visibly tired, said yes. Stating that the OFC does not go back on its commitments. Kase nodded stoically, gestured for the party to walk with him. He wanted to get up to speed as soon as possible. To do this, he would need a bedroom and an office, and he would need to know who he would be reporting to.
Halfbie explained that there were many offices available on the penultimate floor of the black tower. The bedrooms were above that, and he would be reporting and working alongside Drache. This seemed to confuse Kase, who had expected to work with Robert Thornwood. There was an awkward silence before Mordecai explained that he had been killed during the raid on the golden fort. Kase's face showed no emotion upon hearing the news; he nodded and moved on. "This is highly unlikely to be working directly like this with my commanding officer"
Halfbie and Drache brushed this aside, reassuring the commander that he would be the highest authority on matters to do with the OFC's defence as the party were often out on missions and quests. Kase seemed to accept this answer.
Halfbie put a reassuring hand on the commander's shoulder, "You've got this, you go do your... army things... you got this bud."
Kase's stoic walls crumbled for a moment as his face was flooded with fear and dread, realising instantly how this assignment was going to go. The rest of the party gave him empathetic looks as they followed halfbie up the stairs to get some much-needed rest.
As they made their way to their rooms, they passed one room with the new gods sleeping soundly in a bed together. A guard sat next to them, making sure they were safe while they slept. On the bed in front of Cas was a half eaten bowl of chicken noodle soup. Steve explained that, because they randomly appeared in Blackwall and claimed they were the party's issue, it would be best to leave them here for the party to deal with, especially since they kept insisting they were the party's children.
Halfbie remarked on how they have somehow given birth to another god. "if i had a gold coin for every time Halfbie had children that were god like beings i would have two coins, but its strange that it happened twice," commented Viktor.
They all stood around the bed quietly talking about what they should do with the new gods. Halfbie took this time to sit down and eat some of the chicken noodle soup, which was cold. They commented on how it was very good, to which Mordecai used their magic to warm it up, exasperated with the boy.
"Well i mean the next thing on the list was the desert, wasn't it? We need to see Shoni" said Mordecai, "Sorry Viktor"
Viktor gestured for them not to worry.
"She might have information not just on how to help Aidan, but other bits on the gods which might be useful."
The rest of the party nodded in agreement.
Halfbie, who seemed to be quite absent-minded [1] during the discussion, suddenly seemed to click back into focus, agreeing with what was being said. They also mentioned that it might be a good idea to check in on Obeus since they hadn't heard anything about her in a while. The party all nodded in agreement.
Viktor seemed confused as they explained that Obeus was the empress of Ehobel and had travelled with the party before it was revealed that she had been secretly used by Ebis to spy on the party [2]. After getting over the initial shock that the party travelled with the elven monarch he suggested that he could potentially use the scrying spell to see how she is doing. The only problem was that the spell only worked on people he knew well.
Mordecai suggested that they could telepathically share memories of Obeus with Viktor, which they could potentially use to activate the spell. Viktor said it was worth a try and using the spell, his vision shifting to what the rest of the party knew to be the remains of The Tower of Ishnmel.
He saw that Obeus was standing in the middle of the ruins, the place filled with guards and people kneeling on the floor, bags over their heads. A storm raged on in the background as she walked along the rows of prisoners as a general would inspect their troops before battle. She stopped before one and ordered the bag to be removed. It was Lord Enelion. She turned around to a nervous crowd behind her.
She surveyed their fear with a grim smile before shouting, "let this be a lesson to all who raise their sword against the Yelris Dynasty," as she turned back to Lord Enelion and, with a flick of her wrist, a bolt of lightning drove itself into his chest, blowing a hole clear through him. His cries of pain echoed throughout the once great hall. The civilians did not dare flinch or look away as their lord's body crumpled to the ground in a pool of his own blood.
"I am your leader, and you will treat me with respect," she continued "This is my kingdom, this was my mother's, and it always will be mine", as she threw her arm out again, this time the lightning forked, hitting 9 of the rebels that knelt paralysed with fear. The smell of charred meat filled everyone's nostrils. The vision then ended, and Viktor returned to Blackwall. The party looked at him expectantly.
He slowly began to explain what he saw to the horror of the rest of them. Mordecai had to double check that Viktor got the right person. They almost didn't believe him, claiming that it was very out of character for her.
Obeus' behaviour had shaken many of them and made them wonder whether they needed to go to Ishnmel to find out what was happening there and whether she needed any help. Halfbie suggested that they should maybe sleep on it, as they were all very tired and probably shouldn't make decisions at the moment. Steve agreed with them and walked them to their rooms.
Halfbie was about to enter their room when Mordecai stepped in front of them and blocked the way.
"Hey Mx Reverence, normally i would be very excited for a slumber party, but im really tired and just want to rest"
"You seem really out of it, and I wanted to check in", Mordecai said innocently.
"Well, it's been a long couple of weeks, and now I'm just really tired." Halfbie explained.
"Yes...?"
"Well i got my gold back... and more. ehh, and now it's just figuring out what comes next."
"Well, you know my room is right next door to yours, so if you need anyone to talk to that's not someone in your head then just say hi," Mordecai said with a kind smile.
"Oh i don't really talk with the guy upstairs... he's a bit scary."
Mordecai let out a knowing chuckle, "Ah we hated each other for a really long time..."
Before Mordecai could finish what they were saying Chenris pinged a message saying "Still do"
"See?" the mod said, gesturing to the message. "He was always an arsehole, but towards the end of his life, he changed a bit. He wasn't kind by any means, but he seemed to have found his humanity... I also know how it feels to have things feel completely out of your control. If things start to feel that way, you know where I am"
"Do you feel out of control now?" asked Halfbie.
"No, this is the most in control I have felt for a while."
"What changed?"
Mordecai explained that they had reached an agreement with Seifer and seemed to see and respect each other a lot. in fact when Mordecai went to kill their father, Seifer and Mordecai worked together to kill him. They explained that having a better understanding has led them to feel like everything wasn't flying out of control. Mordecai urged Halfbie to talk with Chenris further and reach a better understanding.
Halfbie explained that, from what little Chenris has said, he is uncomfortable with taking over what should be Halfbie's body and does his best to stay out of it and ensure there isn't a huge amount of crossover. However, sometimes Chenris' mental barriers falter for a moment, and memories and thoughts slip through.
Mordecai nodded and reiterated that Halfbie could always talk to them if they needed to.
During the night, Drache began having a strange dream. In the dream, he was standing in a lush, beautiful field that he instantly recognised as the Feywild. As he looked around him, he saw a huge dust cloud making its way through the field. A large herd of unicorns created the cloud, and right at the front was a unicorn in regalia carrying The Korrigan.
The Korrigan instantly spotted Drache and changed the direction of the pack to straight at Drache. The unicorns came to an abrupt stop before Drache. The Korrigan stared at him from atop their mount. For a long moment, something felt off, but it was too subtle for Drache to notice. Then he saw it: the green grass of the field was slowly fading, losing its colours. In fact, everywhere slowly lost its colour.
As soon as Drache noticed what was happening, the Korrigan's head snapped to one side as his face began to contort into the form the party had last seen him in. With his head still at a 90-degree angle, he said, "oh hello Drache, you are Drache arent you?"
As the Korrigan said this, suddenly the unicorns turned to dust, and the herald was now mere inches away from drache's snout. "Do you wanna play a game??" it said, its voice dropping as it spoke.
"ugh ar- are you ok?" stammered Drache.
The Korrigan let out a bizarre laugh, "The trees scream, and the colours taste weird... Of course"
"if you would like to play a game, if it would make you feel better then sure"
The Korrigan frowned "The real Drache wouldn't be so logical! How do I know you're the real Drache and not just another tree?!?"
"I don't know, you could try tasting me, I'm cold and salty, remember?"
The colour slowly returned to the environment as the Korrigan seemed to accept drache's answer. His eyes were beginning to well up as he brought Drache in for a big hug.
"its been so long!" said Drache.
The Korrigan took a step back and said they seemed to remember Drache as bigger and stronger. Drache didn't address the comment and began updating the Korrigan on how they had been doing. He explained that they had just beaten another dragon. The Korrigan laughed, commenting on how messed up it is that Drache liked killing his own kind.
"Korrigan... I don't like this... I don't like killing anyone...." stated Drache
"hmmm i can make it funny though..?" replied The Korrigan with a large smile.
"What do you mean?!"
"What's a pact between two old friends?"
"What sort of pact?"
"You let me remain in your dreams and tell me everything that happens. I miss everyone. i miss Mordecai, i miss Halfbie, i miss Aiden... I miss bits and bobs." Korrigan said, drifting off for a moment, "All you have to do is tell me how things are going and do a few small things for me now and again. Have a laugh, sabotage, cause chaos, and I will take you to the Feywilds more."
When Drache asked Korrigan what he meant by 'sabotage' and 'small jobs,' Korrigan responded, 'I don't know,' and said he would let Drache know when he figured it out. He then outstretched his hand, and Drache eventually agreed. Korrigan also explained that he would only be able to talk to Drache in his dreams and wouldn't be like a voice in people's heads like the rest of the party.
Once Drache shook the hand, Korrigan muttered to himself, "You're too easy", before Drache awoke to the sounds of people running around and screaming their heads off as the kids began causing problems for the guards of the black tower. While waking up, Halfbie noticed something else very strange; every inch of free wall space had been covered in magical formulae. Halfbie sat on their bed, hands covered in ink, trying to comprehend what had happened.
Suddenly, Mordecai and Viktor burst into the room, asking for halfbie's help in wrangling the kids; however, they stopped in their tracks when they saw the state of the young wizard's room. Viktor approached one of the walls and began trying to decipher it. He spent some time noticing religious symbols, but not what they meant in the wider context of the equation. The Arithmancy used was much higher than anyone in the party could feasibly know, coming from many years spent in Strixhaven.
While looking at the runes, Viktor felt an intense urge to destroy them because of their possible connection to the gods, but he held himself back. Having recovered from their shock, Halfbie began studying some of the runes, and while they couldn't understand all of it, they could gather that it had something to do with Magical Siphons and Pinholes. However, the calculations seemed to get even more esoteric than that.
Halfbie muttered something about how they had only really been dreaming about magical theorems and that they had no recollection of writing any of this stuff down. They then turned to Viktor and asked if Halfbie should worry. Viktor stated that, in his professional medical opinion, Halfbie should get an exorcism, but no one was sure whether that would work, or even save Halfbie.
Viktor thought to himself for a moment. Before stating "wait, I have an idea!" he turned to Steve, "I need the councillors' hall for at minimum 24 hours, and I must not be disturbed. Mordecai I will need your help once the spell has been completed."
Steve nodded and rushed off to make arrangements. Mordecai then decided to go and see the new gods. They found Cas walking through the halls of the palace, with a duvet cushioning her head as she clumsily bumped into the walls. A guard tried to step so she would not get hurt, but she managed to get away before demanding more chicken noodle soup.
Mordecai eventually caught up with Myst and Seer in the kitchens, where a guard was slowly making her some more soup. As Mordecai entered the room, they stated: "ah you're back, did you have a nice trip?"
"yeah i guess, we got the gold we needed and although it was an eventful night to say the least."
"You killed your father, didn't you?"
"Yes i did."
"That's good, he was bad."
"Do you know what your father's plan was with you?" asked Mordecai.
"I suppose I can tell you he wanted to turn us into Gods. In a perfect world, he would have it so we were the only God, and that would make his life easier."
"A very selfish way of doing things."
"Yes, very. But we are very much enjoying it here, and we never cared about becoming a god."
Mordecai then asked about Cas and how long the two thought she might have left. However, the twins were unsure, as nothing like this had ever happened before, but if they had to guess, not for a long time. They explained that she is a being with too much magical power for her body to handle. Mordecai was quiet for a moment before the twins said that the party might have a way to help the new gods. Mordecai nodded and explained that there might be someone in the desert who could help them.
Mordecai changed the subject and asked if the two could have a look at the writing on halfbie's walls. The twins agreed and followed Mordecai upstairs. In the room, they walked around for a moment before turning and stating that they understood. When asked to explain the calculations, they simply said 'Spoilers'.
Realising that asking about Chenris' plans would be futile, Mordecai found Cas. Cas was sitting at the kitchen table, still eating a bowl of soup. As soon as Mordecai entered the room, Cas looked up and shouted, "I am Cas, Destroyer of Soup and bringer of Comedy!!" before diving her spoon into the soup and taking a big bite.
Mordecai asked how they were doing, and Cas said they were well, but they assumed they were dying, stating it was probably because of all their magic. Mordecai did not know what to say, but before they could speak, Cas reached over and poked them in the forehead.
Mordecai instantly found themselves in their head, similar to when they took down their father. Seifer was in one corner of their mind, in an armchair, while Cas stood in between them. Seifer made no sound; she just sat back and watched. Mordecai found it difficult to move around in their headspace. Instead, they kept looking between Seifer and Cas, well aware of wSeifer Willow ‡|hat Seifer wanted to do.
Cas dismissed their worries, saying that she had no chance of hurting Cas as she was a new god.
"Your older siblings said they would like you to stay in the OFC," Mordecai finally said.
"That is what Cas wants. Cas wants to stay with Mordecai and Mordecai's friends. They are nice to Cas. not everyone would be nice to Cas. Cas is small and Cas cannot see. some people in your world do not like those who are not them. and Cas is not them."
Mordecai looked over to Seifer, who was silently watching. Before returning to Cas, "if you stay here and don't become a god, then you will die."
Cas nodded in understanding.
Mordecai then shared a glance with Seifer, stating that it wasn't her decision to make, and that Mordecai was well aware of what she thought on the matter. "Someday she won't be just 'Cas', she will become a god and burn this world to the ground. But from what she was saying, if she stays here, then she will die anyway; that way, we won't even have blood on our hands."
Mordecai takes Cas' hand and bends down to meet her at her level. "Cas, I need you to promise me something..."
"Cas will try!"
"We are friends, special friends"
"Cas and Mordecai are friends!?! Mordecai and Cas friends forever?!?" Cas said with excitement and shock.
"Yes"
"Mordecai will never leave Cas"
"As long as you don't leave Mordecai."
"Cas will try hardest not to do that!"
"I have a person who was going to try and fix you... You do not need fixing." said Mordecai.
"Cas does not need fixing?"
"no Cas is perfect just as she is"
"Mordecai is Cas' best friend ever, Mordecai is nicest to Cas. Ok when Cas goes to see Shoni, Cas will say no and that Cas is not broken. Cas is Cas, bringer of perfect!!!!" Cas shouted as she struck a pose.
"And when Viktor says he can fix or heal you, he can't"
"Viktor is Cas's friend, but he just doesn't understand."
"Hmm, ok, Cas trusts Mordecai. Mordecai would not hurt Cas. Mordecai and Cas are best friends forever!!"
Footnotes
SPOLIERS: Halfbie was absent-minded because Chenris had somewhat taken over the analysis of the New Gods. He wanted to understand their nature better and what made them so powerful. From what he could tell without a more thorough examination, the new gods are a huge sink for magical potential. Chenris can see they feel unstable, though they have only felt something like this unstable magic energy around Obeus, but to a much weaker degree. This magic feels somewhat familiar to him as well; Chenris had felt it a few times before. ↩︎
This was revealed in Session 32 ↩︎
